One of the most powerful features of the BIMWorkplace CDE is the ability to track document changes over time.
With built-in version control, your team can always identify, access, and restore the correct version of a file. Older versions are never lost, allowing you to revert changes when needed and avoid costly mistakes or rework.
1 – How Version Control Works
Whenever a file with the same name is uploaded to the CDE:
- The new file is saved as the latest version.
- All previous files are stored as earlier versions.
- The date, time, and user who made the change are automatically recorded.
2 – Viewing File Versions
To view a file’s version history:
- Open the CDE and locate the file.
- Either:
- Click the version number in the Version column, or
- Select the file and click Versions in the ribbon.
- The Versions panel will display:
- All previous versions of the file
- Who uploaded each version
- The upload time and date
- Which version is currently active
Note:
Uploaded versions of federated models will automatically appear in Version Management and can be activated for use in the federated viewer (click here for more details).
3 – Restoring a Previous Version
If you need to revert to a different version:
- In the Version panel, select the checkbox next to the desired version, or
- Click the three-dot menu next to the version and select Make current
Click Apply.
The selected version will now be marked as the latest version in the folder.
4 – Why Use Version Control
- Avoid errors caused by working with outdated documents
- Maintain transparency by tracking who made changes and when
- Quickly recover information if a mistake occurs
Version control ensures your project documentation remains reliable, traceable, and safe throughout the entire workflow.
