Connecting a Project to Autodesk Forma
Connect a BIMWorkplace project to an Autodesk Forma project to make supported Autodesk content available through the BIMWorkplace integration.
Before connecting the projects, you must connect your Autodesk account to BIMWorkplace. The Autodesk account connection authorizes access to Autodesk Forma, while the project connection defines which Autodesk Forma project is associated with the BIMWorkplace project.
Before you start
Make sure that:
- Your Autodesk account is connected in User Settings > Integrations.
- The connected Autodesk account has access to the Autodesk Forma project you want to connect.
- You have access to Project Settings > Autodesk ACC in the BIMWorkplace project.
For instructions on connecting your Autodesk account, see Connecting BIMWorkplace to Autodesk Forma.
Connecting an Autodesk Forma project
- Open Project Settings.
- Select Autodesk ACC.
- Under Hub, select the Autodesk hub that contains your project.
- Under Project, select the Autodesk Forma project you want to connect.
- Select a Default inbound assignee.
- Configure the integration capabilities you want to use, when available.
- Select Save and activate binding.
The Autodesk Forma project is now associated with the BIMWorkplace project and is shown as Active.
Only one Autodesk Forma project can be active for synchronization with a BIMWorkplace project at a time.
Setting the Default inbound assignee
The Default inbound assignee is used when Autodesk Issues are brought into BIMWorkplace as Topics.
When the person assigned to an Autodesk Issue can be mapped to a BIMWorkplace user, the Topic is assigned to that user.
If BIMWorkplace cannot map the Autodesk assignee to a BIMWorkplace user, the Topic is assigned to the Default inbound assignee instead.
This ensures that an imported Topic always has a BIMWorkplace assignee.
Setting the Integration actor
If you use Monitored folders, select an Integration actor.
The Integration actor is the BIMWorkplace project user used for automatic document writes created by monitored Autodesk imports.
The Integration actor is not the Autodesk account used to authorize the connection.
If you are not using monitored folder imports, this setting is not required for that workflow.
Choosing integration capabilities
Depending on the Autodesk integration features available in your environment, Project Settings > Autodesk ACC may provide the following options:
- Documents — makes supported files and folders from the connected Autodesk Forma project available to BIMWorkplace.
- For more information, see Using Autodesk Forma Documents in BIMWorkplace.
- Monitored folders — allows selected Autodesk folders to be monitored so that supported files can be automatically imported into the BIMWorkplace CDE.
- For more information, see Monitoring Autodesk Forma Folders.
- Federated models — allows supported BIM models stored in Autodesk Forma to be used as federated models in BIMWorkplace without first copying the original model file to the BIMWorkplace CDE.
- For more information, see Using Autodesk Forma Models in BIMWorkplace.
Only enable the capabilities required for the workflows you intend to use.
The availability of these options depends on the Autodesk integration capabilities enabled for your BIMWorkplace environment.
Synchronizing the Autodesk project
The active project connection provides a Sync now action.
Use Sync now when you want BIMWorkplace to reconcile the supported content from the connected Autodesk Forma project without waiting for the normal synchronization process.
Depending on the capabilities enabled for the connection, synchronization can include Autodesk Issues, documents, and updates to federated model references.
Changing the active Autodesk Forma project
If another Autodesk Forma project has already been configured, you can activate it from Project Settings > Autodesk ACC.
When another Autodesk project is currently active, BIMWorkplace asks you to confirm the change.
Activating the new project stops synchronization for the Autodesk project that was previously active.
The previous project connection is not deleted. It remains listed and can be activated again if needed.
Important: Before changing the active project, consider whether the current Autodesk integration is being used for Issues, documents, monitored folders, or federated models.
Troubleshooting
The Autodesk ACC section says that Autodesk must be connected first
Connect your Autodesk account in User Settings > Integrations > CDE Services > Autodesk ACC, then return to Project Settings.
The Hub I need is not available
Make sure the connected Autodesk account has access to the required Autodesk hub. If necessary, reconnect using the appropriate Autodesk account.
The Autodesk Forma project I need is not listed
First make sure you selected the correct Hub. Only projects available to the connected Autodesk account can be selected.
Another Autodesk project is shown as Active
Only one Autodesk Forma project can be active for synchronization with the BIMWorkplace project at a time.
Activate the project you want to use. BIMWorkplace asks you to confirm that synchronization for the currently active project will be stopped.
Synchronization does not complete successfully
Check whether BIMWorkplace displays a reconnect warning or synchronization status in Project Settings > Autodesk ACC. Reconnect Autodesk if required, then run Sync now again.
Next step
After connecting the Autodesk Forma project, you can use supported Autodesk models in BIMWorkplace without first copying the original model file to the BIMWorkplace CDE.
For more information, see Using Autodesk Forma Models in BIMWorkplace.
