Supported File Types

BIMWorkplace supports different file types depending on how the file is used inside the platform.

Some files can be uploaded and stored in the CDE. Some can be opened directly in the browser. Others can be imported as models, used in the Autodesk Forge Viewer, processed by the BIMWorkplace Viewer, or used in data workflows.

Model files

Model files can be uploaded, processed, and visualized depending on the viewer and workflow available in the project.

Supported model file types include:

o   RVT

o   IFC (IFC

o   NWC

o   NWD

These files may be used for model visualization, model federation, coordination workflows, data extraction, topic creation, and model-based review.

IFC versions supported

BIMWorkplace currently supports the following IFC versions:

o   IFC 2x3

o   IFC 4

o   IFC 4x3

Other IFC versions are not currently supported.

Files supported by the Autodesk Forge Viewer

When the project is configured to use the Autodesk Forge Viewer, model visualization depends on the file formats supported by that viewer and by the BIMWorkplace processing workflow.

Common supported formats include:

o   RVT

o   IFC

o   NWC

o   NWD

Some models may also include imported 2D Sheets, such as sheets available from Revit models.

Files supported by the BIMWorkplace Viewer

When the project is configured to use the BIMWorkplace Viewer, model visualization currently works exclusively with IFC models.

CDE storage files

The CDE can be used to store and view project files and documentation in different formats.

These files can be organized in folders, versioned, shared, transmitted, downloaded, and controlled through folder permissions.

Files that can be viewed directly in the CDE

Besides the model, some other file types can be previewed directly in BIMWorkplace without downloading them.

Common previewable files include:

o   PDF

o   DOCX

o   XLS

o   XLSX

o   JPG

o   PNG

Compressed files

Compressed files can be stored in the CDE for documentation and exchange purposes.

Supported compressed formats may include:

ZIP

Compressed files are intended for storage, download, and sharing. They are not processed as models.

Spreadsheet files for data workflows

Spreadsheet files are used in BIMWorkplace for exporting, editing, and reimporting data.

Supported spreadsheet formats include:

o   XLSX

o   XLS

These files may be used in Explorer, Design, reports, and integration workflows depending on the module.

Image files

Image files can be uploaded or attached in different workflows, such as topic creation, comments, markups, and documentation.

Supported image formats include:

o   JPG

o   PNG

Images may be used as topic attachments, pasted into comments, uploaded to support issue documentation, or generated from model viewpoints.

Important notes

File support may vary depending on the module, viewer configuration, and workflow.

A file that can be stored in the CDE may not necessarily be previewed, processed, imported, or used for model visualization.

For example, a ZIP file can be stored and shared in the CDE, but it is not processed as a model. A spreadsheet can be used for data workflows, while a model file can be used for visualization and coordination.

For model visualization, make sure the correct viewer is selected in Project Settings > Configurations.

The Autodesk Forge Viewer supports the model formats available through the Forge-based workflow, while the BIMWorkplace Viewer currently works exclusively with IFC models.
