Editing Data in Explorer

The Explorer module allows authorized users to edit non-geometric model data directly in BIMWorkplace.

Editable data may include attributes such as Manufacturer, Comments, maintenance information, execution status, or custom fields created for the project.

Only data attributes can be edited. Geometry cannot be changed in Explorer.

Before you start

Before users can edit data, a Project Manager must define which users are allowed to edit each property.

Editing permissions are configured by property, so different users can be authorized to edit different types of information.

For example, a cost estimator may be allowed to edit cost-related fields, while a facility manager may be allowed to edit maintenance-related fields.

Define editing permissions

To allow users to edit specific properties:

  1. Open the Properties panel.

  2. Go to the Admin tab.

  3. Click Property Permissions.

  4. Select from which models the properties will be chosen.

  5. Select the attributes that users should be allowed to edit.

  6. Click Assign.

  7. Select the users who should have editing access.

  8. Click Add Editors.

Once permissions are assigned, the selected users can edit those properties in Explorer.

Edit data from the Properties panel

Authorized users can edit data directly from the Properties panel.

To edit a property:

  1. Select an element in the model.

  2. Open the Properties panel.

  3. Find the editable property.

  4. Click or double-click the field with the pencil icon.

  5. Enter the new value.

  6. Confirm the change.

Editable fields are identified by a pencil icon.

Edit data from the Explorer Grid

Authorized users can also edit data directly in the Explorer Grid.

When an editable property is included in a data group configuration, it appears in the table and can be edited inline.

To edit a value in the grid:

  1. Open the relevant data group in Explorer.

  2. Find the property column you want to update.

  3. Click or double-click the editable cell.

  4. Enter the new value.

  5. Confirm the change.

Editable cells display a pencil icon.

When changes are applied

Changes are applied immediately after editing.

Updated values become available to other users with access to the same model data. This helps teams keep project information current without opening the native authoring software.

For RVT models uploaded through the BIMWorkplace Revit plugin, edited data can also be synchronized back to Revit using the BIMWorkplace plugin.

Important notes

Explorer only supports editing of non-geometric data.

Users must have permission to edit each specific property.

If a field does not show a pencil icon, the user does not have editing permission for that property, or the property is not editable.

Data must be extracted before it can be viewed or edited in Explorer. Data extraction is available for RVT models uploaded through the BIMWorkplace Revit plugin and for IFC models.
