When models are imported into BIMWorkplace, the Explorer data table initially displays all elements in a standard hierarchical structure:
Category – Family – Type along with a column showing the element count.
The Group By feature allows users to create custom table structures tailored to their objectives – such as quantity takeoff, planning, data analysis, code completion, or reporting.
Requirements
To use the Group By functionality:
- Models must have extracted data available
- This is supported for IFC models, and
- Revit models uploaded via the BIMWorkplace Plugin
- The models must be selected and active in Models Management.
If these conditions are not met, the grouping options will not be available.
Creating a Group
1 – Open the Group By Configuration
- Click the Group By
- The configuration panel will open in the right sidebar.
2 – Define the Group Structure
- Enter a name for the group.
- Select the desired properties from the dropdown list.
- Arrange the properties in the order you want the data to be grouped.
This order defines the hierarchical structure of the table.
3 – Choose Table Columns
- Select the columns you want to display in the table.
- Arrange them in the order that best supports your workflow.
- For numerical columns, you can apply calculation rules such as:
- Sum
- Average
- Maximum
- Minimum
- Count
- Once configuration is complete, click Apply to create the group.
4 – Apply the Group to the Table
- In the Structure tab, select the newly created group from the dropdown list.
- Click Update Schedule to recalculate the data.
The table will now display the new structure based on the grouping rules you defined. Anytime rules are changed (switching to another schedule or altering the current group), you must update the schedule.
Managing Groups
Edit a Group
- Click Edit Group in the menu.
- Modify the grouping rules as needed and apply the changes
Delete a Group
- Click Delete Group in the menu and confirm.
Important: If the group is used in any saved views, it cannot be deleted until those views are removed.
With Group By, your team can collaboratively structure and analyze model data in a shared environment, ensuring consistency and efficiency across the project.
