Project attributes are predefined pieces of information that a project manager can set up in advance to be used later to create topics in Collaboration and identify files in CDE.
BIMWorkplace includes a set of default attributes but also allows you to create and customize your own.
1 – Default Attributes
By default, new projects contain the following attributes:
Area, Labels, Milestone, Type, Priority, Status, Version, Description, Indicators, Size, LastUpdated, UpdatedBy and VersionAddedBy.
Important: Default attributes cannot be deleted, but you can edit their values or add new ones.
To edit default attributes:
- Go to Project Attributes in Project Settings.
- Select the attribute from the list
- Click ‘Edit’ in the ribbon to open the side tab
- From here, you can:
- Hover over an existing option to choose:
- Rename a value (pencil icon)
- Add a new value (middle button)
- Delete a value (trash icon)
- Reorder values by dragging them
- Show/Hide values with the Active switch
- See the Topics count (number of Collaboration topics using that value)
- Hover over an existing option to choose:
- Click Apply to save changes
2 – Transfer Attributes
The Transfer Attributes feature lets you:
- Copy attributes from another existing project in the same Workplace
- Copy default attributes from another language version (English, Portuguese, Spanish, French)
3 – Custom Attributes
Project Managers can create new attributes when project-specific fields are needed.
To create a custom attribute:
- Click ‘New’ to open the Attribute Definition tab
- Enter a name and choose a type:
- Date – no additional setup required
- Text – configure how the text can be entered:
- Unlimited length
- Fixed length or character range
- Allowed content: alphanumeric, alphabetic, or numeric
- Dropdown – click Add Row to create predefined values, then manage them using the same editing options as default attributes (rename, reorder, active/deactivate
Important:
Once an attribute is created, you may edit its name and existing values, but not its type. Additionally, if an attribute is being used in a Naming Standard, it cannot be edited at all.
NOTE: Use Dropdown attributes for values that require consistency across the project, and Text or Date attributes for free-form or variable information.
4 – Assigning Attributes to Modules and Folders
For an attribute to appear in a module, it must be activated for that module.
Assigning to Modules
- Select the attribute(s) you want to configure and click Manage Attributes in the ribbon
- In the Modules tab, choose the modules where the attribute should be available and click Apply
The Modules column will automatically update to display the icons of the modules where the attribute is active:
Assigning to Folders (CDE Only)
Attributes can also be linked to specific CDE folders.
- In the Folder Settings tab, select the folders where the attribute should be applied.
- Click Apply
Note: the folder must already exist in the CDE for it to appear in this list.
6 – Using Project Attributes
Once configured, attributes can be used in:
- Collaboration: The custom attributes appear as fields when creating topics.
- CDE: Custom attributes assigned to folders appear as new columns in those folders, enabling better classification and filtering of files. These attributes can also be used when configuring Naming Standards, which can then be applied to selected folders.
